Overview
When a customer pays by credit card on your website, the payment is authorized but not yet transferred to your payment gateway or bank account. You need to manually capture it to move the funds.
How to capture a payment
- Open the order and go to the Order Details tab
- Click the Billing Details tab
- Locate the transaction line for the order
- In the Action column, click Capture
Once captured, the Action column will update from Capture | Void to Partial | Full.
⚠️ Do not click Partial or Full — those options are for issuing refunds only. See Issuing a refund in the Control Panel for more.
Note: Capture is not available for standard PayPal transactions.
Capture time limits
Payment authorizations expire if not captured within your gateway's allowed window. If an authorization expires, the customer will need to be recharged.
- Capture payments within 7 days of receiving an order to avoid authorization expiration
- If you need to add charges to an order before capturing, see Managing order contents, charges, and notes
When funds become available
After capture, funds typically appear in your payment gateway account within 12–24 hours before being batched out to your bank.
Best practices
- Capture payments as soon as you confirm you can fulfill the order
- If you can't fulfill an order promptly, communicate with the customer before capturing their funds
- Check the age of pending payments regularly in your Order Details to avoid expired authorizations
