When customers pay by credit card on your website, their funds must be captured before they’re transferred to your payment gateway or bank account.
How to capture a payment
Go to the Order Details tab for the order you’d like to capture.
Click the Billing Details tab.
Locate the transaction line and total amount for the order.
-
In the Action column, click Capture.
Note: Capture is not available for standard PayPal transactions.
After you click Capture, the button will change from Capture | Void to Partial | Full. Do not click “Partial | Full.” These options are only for refunds.
Once you see the change, the payment has been successfully captured.
❗Payment capture time limits
Most gateways place an expiration window on capturing an authorized payment. If the payment isn’t captured within the appropriate time frame, the authorization expires and the customer will need to be recharged.
We recommend that you capture payments within 7 days of receiving an order.
Best practices
Capture payments as soon as you confirm you can fulfill the order
If you cannot fulfill an order promptly, communicate with the customer before capturing funds.
Keep an eye on the age of pending payments in your Order Details to avoid authorization expirations.
When funds become available
For credit card transactions, funds typically appear in your gateway processor account within 12–24 hours before being batched out to your bank account.
