You can manage and customize your sales tax settings directly in the Control Panel. This ensures customers are charged the tax rate you specify at checkout based on your dealership’s tax obligations.
How to add or edit tax rates
Go to Settings → Tax Rates in your Control Panel.
Click Add New to create a new tax rate.
-
Enter the following details:
State / Province – Select the region where the tax applies.
Tax Rate (%) – Enter the percentage rate to be applied.
Is Primary – Check this box to set the main tax rate that applies by default.
Click Add New again to save your changes.
Once saved, your state or province tax rate will appear in the list at the bottom of the page. From there, you can edit or delete existing rates as needed.
💡 Tip: If you don’t see your tax settings, make sure you’ve selected the correct website in the dropdown menu at the top right of your Control Panel.
How tax rates are applied
Your primary state tax rate will automatically apply to orders placed by customers within your state or province.
You can add additional states or provinces as needed — but only one can be set as Primary.
If a customer is located outside your state, taxes are applied based on your jurisdiction’s e-commerce tax laws.
Using TaxJar for automatic tax calculation
We now offer TaxJar on an opt-in basis at no additional cost. When enabled, TaxJar automatically calculates sales tax based on the shipping address rather than a flat state rate. Learn more about TaxJar.
Applying tax to core and shipping
In some cases, your dealership may be required to apply sales tax to Core and/or Shipping charges, depending on state law. To do this:
Go to Settings > Setup
Scroll down to Payment Settings
Check the boxes for Tax Core and/or Tax Shipping, whichever applies
⚠️ Important: Check your local requirements
Sales tax laws for online orders vary by region. While traditionally you were only required to collect tax from customers in your own state, many regions now require businesses to collect tax from out-of-state buyers as well.
Be sure to confirm your current requirements and exemptions with your accounting department or local tax authority to stay compliant. SimplePart LLC does not provide tax, legal, or accounting advice. These features are intended for calculating local e-commerce sales taxes per dealer preference only. Dealers are responsible for remitting any taxes collected to the appropriate tax authorities. Please consult your own tax, legal, or accounting advisor for any questions about your local e-commerce sales tax requirements.
